Here. Put this on.

Hubby and I have a pretty typical courtship story. We met in English class at our local community college in 2002. I sat down next to him in my supercute red skirt and brand new knee-high boots, but he barely looked at me. Of course, I was instantly attracted to his indifference, and his appeal increased exponentially when I realized that the boy was wicked-smart. Luckily, he warmed up to me quickly and we developed a witty and sarcastic rapport, then a playful rivalry when we discovered we were competing for the top grade in our class. (I beat him by one-tenth of a point, and yes, I'm still gloating seven years later! ;P)

I began to woo him by passive-aggressively inviting everyone in class out for drinks and appetizers just to have an excuse to see him outside of Creative Writing 101. He courted me by mocking my new tattoo and writing me a poem on the dangers of drinking and driving, which included gruesome references to human brain matter being scraped off wet pavement. (I know, I know, who wouldn't fall head over heels with sweet talk like that?) Eventually we managed to stumble our way onto an actual date, and five months later we were engaged. How did that happen, you ask? Please, prepare yourself to be overcome with emotion at the sheer romance of hubby's proposal...

We were driving to the movies one rainy night in his grandparents borrowed pickup truck. Without taking his eyes off the road, he pulled a ring out of his jacket pocket and thrust it at me. Then he poured out heartfelt declarations of his undying love he said, "Here. Put this on."

And I did.

Yep, that's it. The big romantic story of how our life together began. I keep telling him he owes me a real, down-on-one-knee, champagne-at-sunset proposal, but after 5 years, I've quit holding my breath that it's ever going to happen. Besides, he's given me two of the world's most precious children, and nothing else he has to offer can ever top that!

LOL love this story..could be worse, he could have popped into the shop at the gas staton while paying for gas, bought a sad bunch of flowers and asked you to marry him in front of other customers...no ring...you could have said 'no' cos of unromantic setting and lack of ring...he could then have gone back into shop and asked for money back for flowers...oh yes!!!true story...he did better next time and 20 years on i still tease mercilessly...

Mine said, "I just can't take it any more" and pulled out the ring. For a boy who can't stand surprises having a ring burning a hole in his pocket for a week was more than he could stand I guess! :o) oh they have such a way with words!

Hehehe! Mine got me to swear on tape (I never swear) by tricking me about the ring.....then he played the tape back for my family. Ahh!

I love your proposal!! Somehow my hubby pissed me off in the midst of proposing to me. For some odd reason I still said yes : )

Maybe I'll have to share my story today since I can't really think of anything else to share.

What sweet pictures! I have to say, after reading about your courtship (brain matter??) the proposal isn't super surprising. It does crack me up that he didn't even pull over!!

Dude, I can top you! I basically got my ring slammed on a table in front of me, while my (now) husband was yelling at me.

I'll blog it in the next couple days.

Beautiful children and beautiful pictures. I am surprised my husband even got around to proposing, in fact, I did the proposing, LOL. It took about all I had just to get him to notice me. We met through my cousin and a mutual friend by accident. I actually went home and told my grandmother the night we met that I had met the man I was going to marry at a BP gas station, LOL. He later told me he had noticed me at the beginning too, but was shy! But I was well on my way to wondering what was wrong with me that I couldnt capture his interest or get him to ask me out. My cousin and I set up pool tournaments, rolling yards at Halloween, etc... with him and our mutual friend and then I eventually asked him to give me a ride home even though my ride lived right beside me (and he knew this). He said his "old memories" are the scent of CoverGirl makeup and Big Red chewing gum, LOL.

I love this story! Somehow it fits the two of you - and maybe you wouldn't like just "any old regular" proposal anyway :)

And yes, those kiddos are adorable!

That was cute. Mine put a diamond in a peanut shell, which was glued to my birthday card, and told me there was something on the card to find. I broke open several peanuts and one of the shells was lined with some cotton with a diamond in it. He gave me the rock and asked me to marry him. Not only did I get the guy I got to choose/design my own setting.

Well, I'd say it's romantic because you're obviously in love!

Oh, I love to hear proposal stories! Your story was great. My hubby had a few beers too many and proposed, not the most romantic thing ever :)

well isn't this just a gooey, warm story.

1. it's always the indifference that gets us. what up with that?

2. class A girl move- maneuvering a way to see him outside of class without acting like you care. love it.

3. he's right about that drunk driving stuff, i have a hole my head cus of that - heed the advice of said poem.

I think that is a great story! And you are not alone. When my dad proposed to my mom he said, "so do you want to?" She had to ask him, "do I want to what?"

Shellie said...

That's a neat tale. My classroom romance flopped so I had to marry a guy I met the day before moving back home instead.

Krystal said...

That story is pretty hilarious! I read your husband's proposal to my husband...he said, "That guy is awesome. I like him already!" Your kids are beautiful too! :)

Hi Cari,
It's Lori, Rachelle's friend. I love reading your blog. You are so funny. Your engagement story was great! Garrett and I have been together 11 years and after 10 we just went and bought a ring! LOL! We got married with Rachelle and Travis in Vegas a year later!
Take care, your family is beautiful!
