i Heart {Hats} and Faces

This week's theme over at i Heart Faces is hats. My kids entry is a recent shot of Beauty in her cupcake hat and rainbow-colored tutu. This was the day after she started crawling and she did NOT want to sit still and have her picture taken!

And my adult entry is hubby and the little Beast in their sun hats during our family vacation last July. (stupid Blogger cuts off the edge of the picture if I resize it bigger, grrr...)

Please feel free to offer constructive criticism of my photos; your feedback helps me improve, thanks! And despite tons of online research and 2 hours playing with cameras at Best Buy, I'm still using my point and shoot. If you have an affordable, quality dSLR recommendation for a beginner, please leave that advice in your comments too!

To view more people in hats, head over to i Heart Faces.

How cute!

Look at those adorable faces!

Thanks ladies! I love both these photos, but worry that the one of Beauty is too yellow (that's setting-sun light on her face which is so warm) and perhaps too bright which caused some detail to be lost in her face....

Beauty is just so sweet! What an amazing picture. You composed it perfectly! And what can I say about a Daddy & his little Beast? So adorable! Great entries!

The photo of your little beauty is adorable...so is what she is wearing! What a beauty she is!

Okay, you know me, not afraid to pick apart even the CUTEST of pictures! :) There is so much absolutely right with the Beauty's picture, from the textured flooring to the colorful tutu and hat. However, I too see the yellow. Does your editing software have photo filters or "temperature" settings where you can make it a bit cooler? Skin tones are a bear, aren't they?! And what a great hugging, full of hats picture of your husband and son! Makes me happy.

Great picture! Too cute!

I have a Sony Alpha200. It is a DSLR and it's 10.2 megapixels. I like it a lot and it was relatively inexpensive as far as cameras go....$499. Let me know if you want more specs :)

I agree with Julie, there are so many things right with this image of Beauty. I think toning is very personal, I tend to lean towards a warmer tone rather than a cool tone. I think this is about as cool as I would go. Composition wise the only thing that could have made a SLIGHT improvement would have been a 15 or 20 degree tilt to the left so that beauties face would have fallen into the rule of thirds. Also when my subject is looking up I like to leave more space on the top rather than at the bottom of the image. It gives your subject something to look into if that makes sense. Oh and I'd give the edges a burn to really bring the focus into beauty and not the texture she is sitting on.

As far as camera advice goes...I am a Canon fan through and through so anything outside of their wonderful products is beyond my expertise.

Just some humble advice from one of your biggest fans. ;)

I love the photos and love your blog! I also love that you are from Seattle - yay!

I ended up finding my Nikon D70s on craigslist and it came with one lens, an extra battery, a tripod, software and all sorts of goodies for $475. It's in perfect condition and came with all the original boxes and manuals. After all the research I did, I thought it was quite a steal. Although now I think I need a 200mm lens to get my kids sports. I figure I will "grow" into it - although right now it's way more camera than I need.

So sweet! I know how tough it is to get a still shot of an active baby!

And that last shot with daddy is priceless! Love his expression!

Both your entries are awesome! I like Beast's little smirk. I wish I knew about those poofy tutus when Hanna was a baby, I don't think Qunn would appreciate me putting one on him!

Kameron said...

I have no advice as I am as novice as they come! I think the shot of Beauty is gorgeous! I need ruffles and tutus in my life. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

If that's what you capture with a point and shoot, you must must must get your hands on a DSLR!
That tutu pic is fantastic!

I gave you a little advice about your camera purchase over on iHearFaces social network. I just thought of another option for you...refurb! Go to BHphoto.com. Sometimes they sell "used" cameras. Really they are usually returned cameras that have nothing wrong with them. BH is a highly reputable store. I use them for all of my camera equipment (I have the Nikon D80). They will tell you anything you want about the camera before you purchase, and the customer service is great. I personally know someone who bought a "used" D40 from them 3 years ago, and it was brand new.
